About the Salient Achievements of the Department:   Developed multitrait selection indices for improvement of cattle, goat, pig, poultry and rabbit. Completed type characterization and standardization of breed descriptors for native cattle, buffalo, goat, pig, poultry and duck of Assam. Completed molecular characterization of indigenous cattle population of Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. Completed molecular characterization of Nagaland Long Haired goat, Bengal goat, Assam hill goat and Assam Local goat. Completed molecular characterization of nine indigenous pig populations of the north-east including West Bengal viz.,Niang Megha of Meghalaya, Ghungroo of West Bengal, Votho and Suwo of Nagaland, Zovawk of Mizoram, Mali of Tripura , indigenous pigs of Arunachal Pradesh and Doom and indigenous pigs of Assam. Prepared the cattle and buffalo breeding policy of Assam which is currently in operation. Prepared the draft goat breeding policy of Assam. Completed molecular characterization of FSH-β and halothane gene in indigenous pigs of Assam. Screened the GH and GH receptor gene of buffalo, Graded cattle and yak; SLC11A1 gene of Doom pigs and the fecundity genes (GDF9 and BMPR1B)of Assam Hill goat for existence of polymorphism. Accomplished all necessary requirements for registration of breed viz. development of breed descriptors etc. for Doom pigs of Assam and a proposal for registration of the breed submitted. Developed DNA bank of indigenous livestock genetic resources of north-east India.
