About the Salient Achievements of the Department:
There are three ongoing externally-funded projects. Chemical composition and Nutritive value of different unconventional forages were evaluated. Nutrient requirement of protein and energy of various ruminant and non-ruminant species have been estimated. Chemical composition and nutritive value of some agro-industrial /forest and sericulture industry by-products were evaluated. Level of incorporation of these by-products in different ruminant and non-ruminant species were standardized.Improvement of paddy straw, level of moisture, urea and molasses were standardized. Improvement of paddy straw was also done by ensiling with paddy straw. Evolved economic ration for poultry incorporating fruits, vegetable factory waste viz. Orange peel, cauliflower leaves, cabbage outer leaves ,Indian plum, keturi(dry), blood meal, factory tea waste etc. Evolved economic ration for growing and finishing pigs utilizing colocasia (colocacia esculenta) and rice fermented waste. The level of Turmeric (Curcuma longa) and Curry leaves (Murraya koneigi) as feed supplement in the ration of growing pigs was standardized. Nutritional status of livestock especially dairy cattle has been assessed. Evolved economic ration for goats utilizing agro-industrial by products i.e. Ajar seed (Lagerstroemia flos-reginae). Different organic waste namely poultry litter, poultry manure and cow dung manure can be used in broiler ration replacing cereal grains and their by-products with distinct economic advantage. Chemical composition and nutritive value of different unconventional forages were evaluated in different ruminant species and classified on the basis of nutrient density on DM basis. Identified thirty eight (38) numbers of forages and tree leaves as feed for wild elephant in the Sonitpur district of Assam.
