About the Salient Achievements of the Department:
The history of the Medicinal Chemistry Division of NEIST can be traced back to its year of inception in 1976, when it was a part of the Organic Chemistry Department and led by Dr J S Sandhu as project leader in association with Late Dr J N Baruah, Deputy Director as the Coordinator. In 1982 the Organic Chemistry Department was segregated into three independent sections namely Drugs & pharmaceuticals, Natural Product Chemistry and Synthetic Organic Chemistry headed respectively by Dr J S Sandhu, Dr R P Sharma and Late Dr R C Rastogi. In 2002, the Drugs & Pharmaceuticals was renamed as Medicinal Chemistry Division. The Medicinal Chemistry Division serves as a window of the laboratory to the outside world for carrying out applied oriented basic work in the field of medicinal chemistry. The division has made significant contributions in the emerging areas of organic chemistry particularly synthesis of novel bioactive molecules of contemporary interests. This includes development of new synthetic methods, reagents, and synthesis of novel bioactive molecules. The prime objective of the division is the developments of analogues of antiviral, antibacterial and antitumor agents; developments of analogues of newer steroidal antitumor agents; and developments of newer organic and bio-transformation reactions.

This division has brought laurels to the NEIST-Jorhat by receiving several recognition at the National, International and State level. Based on the outstanding and original scientific contribution made to chemistry, Dr J S Sandhu has been elected Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) in 1997 and National Academy of Sciences (FNASc) in 1987. Dr R C Boruah was elected Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (FNASc) in 2005 and conferred CRSI Bronze Medal in the same year for his significant and original contribution in the field of organic chemistry. Dr R C Boruah was awarded Professor Harish Chandra Goswami Memorial Fellowship by Assam Science Society for the year 2003-2006. Dr D Prajapati has received prestigious Alexander von Humboldt fellowship (AvH) Bonn, Germany during 1988-90 and Dr Biraj Mohan Das Memorial Science Award in 2002. Dr P J Bhuyan received Elsevier Most Cited Paper Award for the year 2005-08 and 2006-09 for his paper published in Tetrahedron Letters.
