Rationale:

NER has a total of 8 Central Universities and 4 State Universities besides more than 300 graduate colleges, a number of central and state-funded research institutes, and more than 100 private institutions. No mechanism to have comprehensive information regarding the courses offered and types of research conducted in the various institutions, manpower availability and their specialization & expertise, lists of publications, contact details etc. A common online platform is also non-existing that may facilitate effective exchange among the teachers and scientists.

Objectives:

To create an online repository for providing comprehensive information regarding biotechnology and bioinformatics resources of north-east, preferably using open-source software and tools.

To develop an online, freely accessible e-learning Server for Bioinformatics and Biotechnology teaching and research which will serve as a common platform for the uploading of courses and other learning materials in addition to sharing of information and news, for all the Biotech Hubs and Bioinformatics Centres under BTISnet and also the schools covered under DBT Online Access Facility of Library Resources (OAFLR).

To provide an online discussion forum to the scientists of the NER to exchange their ideas and views relating to biotechnology teaching and research to encourage collaboration and cooperation.

Contents:

A comprehensive list of NER Institutions conducting research in the field of biotechnology and related areas (state wise list including links to websites, address and contact details)

Details of faculty (including their contact details, research statement and a brief resume)

List of publications of the faculty

Courses offered by different institutions including duration, eligibility conditions, intake capacity, admission procedure etc.)

Sharable online and offline resources, if any

Freely-accessible online e-learning server

A discussion forum accessible to the member institutions and their registered faculties

Expected outcome:

The outcome of the present work will make available information pertaining to human resources, academic and research activities in the areas of biotechnology and bioinformatics in respect of the north-eastern region of India in a single online repository. This is expected to help implementation of development programmes initiated at the government level and provide a platform for exchange of information among the students, researchers, planners & policy makers and the funding agencies.

Implementation:

On LAMP platform:

Linux Operating System

Apache Web server

MySQL Database server

PHP Scripting Language

The e-learning server included within the ambit of the proposed project BABRONE is sought to be implemented through the MOODLE Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
