Indian softshell turtle
Nilssonia gangetica (Cuvier, 1825): The Indian softshell turtle (Nilssonia gangetica), or Ganges softshell turtle is locally known as Ganga Kaso in Assam. This is a large freshwater turtle (carapace length to 70 cm), with a round or somewhat oval carapace. Though widespread, this species is restricted to only few localities in the region. Nesting takes place during winter and hatchlings are seen during monsoon period. A clutch of 8-85 spherical eggs is laid by digging a deep pit. Incubation lasts 217 to 287 days. It is omnivorous in feeding habit and individuals are seen feeding on cattle or even carcasses near the riverbanks. Distribution: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan IUCN Red List status (2021): Endangered (A2d +4d)
