Dr. Joken Bam is currently working as a Scientist at ICAR-National Research Centre on Yak, Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh, India. She is a graduate from College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Selesih, Mizoram under Central Agricultural University, Imphal. She did her Masters in Veterinary Parasitology from ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar, Bareilly in 2007 and obtained her Ph.D. from College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara under Assam Agricultural University in 2016. She began her carrier as a Veterinary Officer under Govt. of Arunachal Pradesh in 2008. She later joined Agricultural Research Services in 2009 and was subsequently posted as a Scientist in ICAR-NRC on Yak in 2010.
Dr. Bam was awarded DBT Overseas Associateship by the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India in 2018, under which she visited Switzerland and worked as a visiting scientist at the Research Institute on Organic Agriculture (FiBL), Frick, Switzerland in the research group of Dr. Florian Leiber for one year. During this period, she worked in the area of alternate parasite management in ruminants under CORE Organic Cofund EU project “MIX-ENABLE” with Dr. Steffen Werne. She also underwent a training in 2019 at the Institute of Parasitology and Tropical Veterinary Medicine, Freie University, Berlin, Germany in the area of pyrosequencing for detection of Benzimidazole resistance in gastrointestinal nematodes of ruminants. She has so far published 20 peer-reviewed articles, one book, seven book chapters, two invited papers, 26 conference papers and over 30 technical articles. Her major area of research is management of parasites in yak on pastures. Her earlier work focussed on epidemiology of parasites in yak, and the status of anthelmintic resistance in yaks and other high altitude livestock on natural pastures. She also worked on ethno-botanicals against haematophagous leeches of yaks under a DBT-funded project. She is actively associated with many research projects on yak parasite, yak diseases, yak milk and socio-economic studies of yak rearing communities.
